From my personal experience, it wasn't so easy getting used to remembering/memorizing a lot of biological terms, memorizing diagrams - which are very important in the study of any biological or allied health related course. Biology and other allied health related courses do not primarily stimulate calculative reasoning in students rather they aim at demanding memory and thinking skills from students. In general terms as one may suppose, becoming a better student requires quite more than hard work. It also requires smart reasoning, wisdom, tactics and eventually divine intervention. However becoming a better student at a particular course discipline requires specific effective steps to excel in that discipline. In this post I will be focusing on how you can become a better biology (or any other health allied course) student.
Below are few effective steps that can guide you to becoming a better biology student;
1) first and most importantly devote a great measure of love for the course without which studying for long hours to grasp course material will seem unproductive and tiring.
Below are few effective steps that can guide you to becoming a better biology student;
1) first and most importantly devote a great measure of love for the course without which studying for long hours to grasp course material will seem unproductive and tiring.
2) Its never impossible as long as you keep trying. Put to work your memory. Keep reading materials and study diagrams were necessary. Initial stages may seem discouraging - nevertheless, Be Consistent.
3) Repeat study of your course materials and diagrams at another study time not quite distant from your last study.
4) Don't just stare and try to memorize diagrams. As the saying goes 'mathematics is not read, it is solved'. Same principle applies here; draw diagrams you have studied on a worksheet and try to recall all right labellings without receiving any help or assistance or using any study aid or course material. This aids your whole work and study to be stored in the long memory part of the brain. Repeat this process 3-5 different times and at different study hours and days and in no time, you'll not only be good in your diagrams but you'll also be able to explain each diagram and what it represents.
5) Biology is a life-course. Every topic you read has in one way or the other a link to things we see around us. For example; I remember while preparing for my exams in General physiology. I was studying the role of proteins ( function of proteins).. The course material was quite much and so much information to memorise for the examination. In my reading, I learnt that proteins act as insulators for the body and for plants, quickly I thought of the ceiling on the roof of the building I reside in, which acts as an insulator of heat from the sun... It seemed so funny but in the examination hall just looking up and staring at the ceiling - that sparked my memory on the importance of proteins as an insulator. Relating study materials and classroom lectures to our immediate environment is a very effective way of studying and boosting memory. This techniques does not only help us understand what we have to study but it guarantees that we'll remember what we have read and eventually have better grades in test and examinations.
With continuous study and a hunger to learn more, you can and you will eventually become an awesome biology student. Please do note this applies to other health related courses as well. I can testify these steps have worked for me, I do hope they work for you too.
