Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)


     We all need a measure of vitamins in our body for one purpose or the other. Though they are collectively called Vitamins they have their respective individual functions. Among other types of Vitamins, today I will be sharing the functions, sources and deficiency of Vitamin B1 otherwise known as Thiamine.

Functions:   Vitamin B1 has the following functions;
        - It protects the heart and the nervous system from the build –up of toxic substances
        - It is Needed to convert
carbohydrates and fats into energy
        -It helps metabolize carbohydrates, maintain appetite and normal digestion.
        - It is part of a coenzyme used in energy metabolism
        - It supports the nervous system of animals and humans.
    
   The sources of Vitamin B1 include the following; Meat (particularly pork), fortified bread and cereals, whole grains, dried beans, potatoes, spinach, nuts, peas, yeast etc.
 
Symptoms of the deficiency of vitamin B1 include;
        -  Tiredness and fatigue,
        -  Muscle weakness
        - Nerve damage
        - Confusion
        - Enlarged heart (more common in alcoholics)
