Microorganisms
that are capable of causing disease are called pathogens. It is important to note that most microorganisms do not cause disease. Many provide
protection against harmful microorganisms by effectively competing with
the harmful organisms for resources, hence preventing them from growing. Other benefits of microorganisms to humans and our immediate environment include;

Immune System Boost: Scientist
demonstrated in 2010 how Bacillus, a rod shaped bacteria found in
the digestive tract binds to the immune system cell and stimulates them to
divide and reproduce. The researchers suggest that in few years time,
individuals with weakened immune system could be treated by introducing these
bacterial spores into the human system. These microorganisms (microbes) could
potentially help the body fight cancerous tumors.
Body shape and Digestion: Microorganisms
play an important role in our body shape by helping us digest our foods as well
as producing chemicals that shape our metabolic rate.
Biodegradation: Microorganisms are
responsible for getting rid of waste generated by industry and households. They
remove toxic substances from acid drainage and other toxins from soil and
water. The nutrients gained from the breakdown of these products then serves as
food to plants, which in turn also serve as food to animals (vegetables etc.)
Waste Water Treatment: When we flush
things down the drain or the toilets, they go to a septic system or waste water
treatment plant at the end of the line. After primary mechanical treatment and
aeration, microbes remove organic materials from the filthy water that flow
into these systems and eventually, water can safely be returned into the rivers
and streams.
The skin holds a large number of bacteria that are very
beneficial to the human body. These bacteria digest waste product secreted by
the skin. The above listed are just a few of the many important beneficial
roles of microorganisms. Microorganisms play crucial roles in humans as well as
plants and animals. Though harmful microorganisms receive more attention than
non-disease causing organisms, we ought to learn to appreciate the fact that
harmless microorganisms exist and are a part of mans everyday life.
